Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion, Standard Chartered Bank

Dr. Maria Angelica Pérez is the Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Standard Chartered Bank and has 10+ years industry recognised D&I expertise both strategic and operational.

Since joining Standard Chartered in 2017, Maria Angelica has overseen the global D&I strategy design and implementation, across 60 markets and for over 86,000 colleagues; which has led to numerous accolades including the Bank being ranked as a Diversity Leader in the Financial Times and becoming the first financial organisation to be certified with EDGE (Economic Dividends for Gender Equality) in Singapore. Maria Angelica has represented the Group as part of the Advisory Council on the World Economic Forum Partnering for Racial Justice in Business and has led the Bank to become a signatory of the International Labour Organisation – Global Business & Disability Network Charter (2019) and The Valuable 500 (2019). In addition, under her leadership the Group D&I team have developed an internal Disability Confident Assessment (benchmarked to external best practice) to help countries identify areas for improvement as part of their local D&I plans and objectives. The assessment has also been shared externally as a downloadable toolkit for clients and the community to apply to their own context. In 2019, the D&I team under her leadership was nominated as Diversity Team of the year.   

Maria Angelica joined Standard Chartered from Ericsson where she was the Global Head of D&I with responsibility for establishing, leading and executing a global D&I strategy as part of the group’s business strategy and integrating it in 180 countries for 110,000+ employees.  Maria Angelica’s key strategies became award-winning programs including ‘Best Diversity Brand’, ‘Top 10 Tech Companies for Women’ and ‘Best Workplace for Women Award’. In 2016, she was nominated as one of the top European D&I leaders of the year. 

Before joining Ericsson, Maria Angelica worked in the financial services industry. She held the role of Head of Diversity and Inclusion for Europe, Middle East and Africa regions at UBS covering 29 countries. She also held the position of Diversity Specialist for the HSBC Global Businesses where she was responsible for the development and implementation of the diversity and inclusion strategy for nine global businesses (approximately 40,000 employees), and was the sponsor for the launch of the HSBC’s award-winning gender diversity network ‘Balance’.

Maria Angelica comes from a background of employee engagement, performance management, organisational development and organisational culture. She holds a doctorate degree from Nottingham Business School (NBS) in Business Administration with focus on diversity and workplace bullying. Dr. Pérez is a respected thought leader and vocal advocate for diversity and the combination of her background, education, and international work experience brings an in-depth understanding to the practice and value of workplace diversity and its implementation.
