Senior Vice President, HR Chief Talent Officer, Merck
Carl Segerstrom is the Chief Talent and Strategy Officer for the organization. In this role, he has responsibility for leading the development and execution of the Company’s Talent, Workforce & Analytics, and Learning & Development strategy with a focus on evolving our organization to meet the demands of a dynamic industry and workforce. His organization will continue its work in enabling a culture where we attract, develop, and retain key capabilities to drive business results and create competitive advantage.
Most recently, Carl served as the Vice President, Human Resources for Merck’s Manufacturing Division, where he had responsibility for the strategic and operational Human Resources support of Merck’s global Manufacturing Division, which operates worldwide, with ~20,000 employees. Prior to that role, Carl was the Head of Human Resources for the Europe & Canada region with responsibility for HR support across the divisions to all the ~18,000 employees located there. In this role, Carl and his team built out an oncology business, executed a complete transformation of senior leadership across the large countries and drove significant changes to the HR operating model in the region.
Carl joined the company in 2000 and was first based in Singapore as HR Leader for the company’s manufacturing network in Asia. He later moved to Switzerland to set up an international Talent Management center of expertise and led the international recruitment and staffing organization where he expanded staffing capabilities globally. Starting as a HR consultant in his native country of Sweden, he soon joined the pharmaceutical industry where he has over 20 years of experience with large pharmaceutical companies such as Pharmacia, Pfizer and Schering Plough.
Carl holds a master’s degree in Human Resource Management from Uppsala University and is a graduate of the Accelerated Development Program at Chicago Booth School of Business.
