Our Vision and History

Vision

At Duke CE, our mission is to prepare leaders to face new challenges, solve more complex business issues and shape a brighter future for their organizations.

Our focus is on customizing to outcomes, bringing new insights to problems, and using innovative, engaging learning methods. We enable individuals and organizations to raise their games and have real impact where it counts – back at work.

We’re working in all corners of the world developing new insights and building capabilities that will enable us to make a difference.

We strive to be a place that matters to our employees—where each person believes they are part of something bigger, something producing a lasting impact.

In everything we do, we operate within a set of five values captured by the acronym BAAMM:

  1. Be a steward of value
    • Conserve and create financial and human worth
  2. Assume positive intent
    • Seek clarity and employ a constructive frame of mind
  3. Anything is possible
    • Imagine and strive for bold objectives
  4. Melt boundaries
    • Collaborate and share resources across groups
  5. Make others great
    • Acknowledge and catalyze contributions and potential

History

Duke Corporate Education (Duke CE) was established in July 2000 as a carve-out of the custom executive education practice of the Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. Blair Sheppard left his position as senior associate dean at Fuqua, and Judy Rosenblum her position as vice president and chief learning officer of The Coca-Cola Company, to found Duke CE.

Encouraged to employ a radically new business model integrating academic and corporate philosophies, Duke CE grew rapidly. Many clients being headquartered in Europe, the need for a greater presence there soon became clear. Thus in June 2003 a strategic relationship with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) was established. In recognition of the opportunities in India, a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIMA) was created in June 2006.

Kim Taylor-Thompson was CEO from 2007-2010, and on July 1, 2010, Mike Canning became Duke CE's third CEO and Gil McWilliam its EVP, Strategy and Capabilities.
