Tom Hughes

Project Director

Tom Hughes designs, develops and manages learning programs for his clients at Duke Corporate Education.

Prior to coming to Duke CE, Tom worked as an independent professional development consultant and coach.  He specialized in design and delivery of training related to consulting and communication skills.  His corporate clients have included Booz Allen Hamilton, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Black & Decker, PICO Oil, BHPBilliton, Tatweer, The Executive Committee of Dubai, Saudi Telecom and Merck.  He has also worked with the Nature Conservancy and Duke Divinity School, and works with public schools to enhance their effectiveness.

Before becoming an independent consultant, Tom was a Senior Associate in Booz Allen Hamilton’s award-winning corporate university, where he created and managed the deployment of numerous professional development and leadership development programs.

Tom also spent several years as a full-time actor and writer, performing on stage and on film, and recording many books-on-tape.  During those years, he managed to avoid both the food-services industry and substantial fiscal success, but did discover many interesting metaphors for learning.

Tom’s academic career is varied—he holds a Master’s degree from Columbia University in Organizational Psychology, with a focus in Organization Development consulting; a conservatory certificate in Acting from the American Repertory Theatre’s Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard; and a Bachelor’s degree in English from Harvard University.  He has written several fiction and non-fiction books and contributed the article on Orientation in the Encyclopedia of Career Development.
