Stephen Mahaley
Director of Learning Technology
How can technology improve the design and delivery of education for our corporate clients?
Answering that question is an ongoing endeavor and central to what keeps Steve engaged in his work as Director of Learning Technology at Duke CE.
Steve collaborates with clients and internal teams to discover how communications and other electronic technologies can support the design work and ultimate delivery of educational services, modules and programs. Current areas of interest include game-based learning, enabling global teams, mobile learning technologies, and advances in learning theory and methodologies that reflect the needs and habits of technology-enabled adult learners.
As the workforce changes and internet- and gamer-generation people enter, and as the information-rich environments continue to evolve along with smarter, more powerful and user-friendly technologies, the need for understanding how these elements intersect in a learning context grows even more important. Technology for technology’s sake is never the goal, but what unique opportunities each new innovation will bring to the design and delivery of education is Steve’s focus.
In terms of other work at Duke CE, Steve has designed and implemented e-learning and technology-based components of programs offered by Duke CE in the role of Solutions Team Leader. Previous to his Solutions Team Leader position, Steve worked with e-Learning Solutions, developing online and classroom-based resources in the support of client programs, and managed the distributed learning team at Duke CE before that. In this role, he was responsible for planning, implementing, supporting and managing distributed learning activities such as program web sites, virtual team environments, and online content delivery.
Prior to his position with Duke Corporate Education, Steve worked in the Executive Education department at The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University creating and supporting web environments and resources for corporate client programs. Those projects included clients in the U.S. and Europe.
Contributing to his primary interest in what makes good learning happen, Steve pursued studies in foreign language education, and has an undergraduate degree in French and a Masters in Teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has taught English and American literature at the University Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France, and has experience with teaching and integrating technology at many levels.
Steve enjoys the continuing adventure that parenting and family life provides, and occasionally finds time to play guitar, ride his bike, do some light construction and mechanical work (otherwise known as auto and home ownership), and make movies.
