Jared Bleak
Executive Director
Jared designs and delivers educational programs to meet clients' strategic challenges. He also serves as a teacher, facilitator, and coach in program deliveries and leads an interactive business simulation that is used as a culminating experience in many programs. He has taught across the U.S., Europe and Asia with clients such as Siemens, Schering, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Progress Energy, Rio Tinto and Lafarge.
Prior to coming to Duke, Jared was at Harvard University, where his research focused particularly on issues of organizational culture, leadership, and governance. There he also taught courses on Managing Negotiations and Introductory Financial Management and was a visiting instructor in other Harvard courses on leadership and management. In addition to his work at Duke, Jared has also served as a faculty member in other executive education programs including The Harvard Institutes for Higher Education and the Executive Leadership and Management Institute at Stanford University.
Along with Bob Fulmer, Jared recently published a chapter titled "What Have We Learned About Strategic Leadership Development" in the book University and Corporate Innovations in Lifelong Learning edited by Charles Wankel and Robert DeFillippi.
Jared is researching and teaching about how corporations can improve their learning environments by embedding learning into everyday work routines. In this work, he has studied the practices of world-class teaching hospitals as well as benchmark corporations in learning and leadership development. This research and its resulting insight have been part of a major cultural change effort at a large professional services firm. Additionally, a piece of this research is documented in a book published by AMACOM press, The Leadership Advantage: How the Best Companies Develop Their Talent for Future Success.
He also continues to research and write on the topic of governance and organizational culture. He is the author of the book, "When For-Profit Meets Nonprofit: Educating Through the Market," which details the dilemmas faced by universities as they pursue market oriented activities. He has written several book chapters and his research articles have been published in Metropolitan Universities, The Journal of Distance Learning Administration, and the Journal of Academic Leadership.
Jared holds a master's and doctorate from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University.
