David Leonard

Project Director

David Leonard is a Project Director at Duke Corporate Education where he partners with clients to improve business performance through the optimal selection, development, and deployment of human capital. He has more than 15 years experience using capability-based development and management systems to help business leaders build talent, enhance individual and team performance, and achieve strategic objectives.   David has worked with numerous Fortune 100 clients across many industries.

A few of David’s recent client engagements have included:

  • Working with a large IT organization in a multi-year effort to create a performance-based culture.  The work concluded with a one-year “performance quest” competition for the organization’s top 500 leaders to ensure they developed the skills, mind set and behaviors needed to effectively lead in the new culture.
  • Partnering with the executive committee of a global professional services firm to forecast, identify and develop the type and quantity of leaders they wanted to “grow” from within their organization. The foundation of this work included the creation of multi-year development maps targeting key points of leader transition and learning in the organization.
  • Working with a major, global pharmaceutical company to address its growth and scale challenges.  The work required the development of organization-wide leader talent standards, development strategies and management processes.
  • Partnering with the senior council of a mid-sized health care company to evolve its business model.  One stream of work required the design and implementation of integrated talent planning, assessment, management and development practices across their US operations.

Prior to joining Duke Corporate Education, David worked with Sibson Consulting, a global human capital consulting firm, as a leader in their employee and executive effectiveness practices.  Before joining Sibson, he was a University Lecturer in the Organizational Behavior department of the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.

David is a frequent author and speaker on leader talent planning, management, and development issues.  His work has been published in Innovations in Professional Education, Perspectives, Applied Cognitive Psychology, Capability, INSIGHT, Target - Innovations at Work, Organizational Development Journal, and WorldatWork Journal.

David received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University.  He also graduated from The University of Richmond with a master’s degree in Psychology and from Wake Forest University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
