Before joining Duke CE, she designed and delivered leadership and executive development programs at The College of William and Mary and Purdue University. Cynthia has also taught at the University of Delaware and the University of Otago (New Zealand).
Her research on executive leadership has been featured in Harvard Business Review, US News & World Report, The Guardian (UK), Veja (Brazil) and other leading national and international publications. Additionally, she is a research scholar with Project GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavioral Effectiveness). GLOBE is a multi-award-winning 62-nation study of leadership, organizational culture, and societal culture based initially at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and now at Thunderbird University. Cynthia was the lead author (with Florence Denmark and Deanne Den Hartog) of a chapter in the first GLOBE book, Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: A 62-Nation Study that focused on cross-cultural differences in gender egalitarianism and their implications for societies, organizations, and leaders.
Cynthia’s leadership research has been published in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and American Psychologist. In her most recent publication (Journal of Leadership Studies, 2007), she published (with Holly H. Brower and C. Marlene Fiol) a study of CEO communication that distilled past research from a wide variety of disciplines to create a highly practical framework and guidance around effective leader communication.
Cynthia served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition division of the Academy of Management. She earned both her Ph.D. and master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Rice University, and her honors B.A. (cum laude) from the University of South Florida.
