Byron Hanson, PhD

Managing Director

Working out of Duke CE's West coast office, Byron leads a team in the design and delivery of customized corporate education focused on solving strategic business problems. His passion area is leadership development, primarily the facilitation of learning for leaders towards achieving tangible organizational and individual outcomes.

Before joining Duke CE, Byron had an array of opportunity to engage education and organizational development from an international perspective. He has worked as an internal people manager in the corporate environment for Labatt Breweries of Canada. There he served on a leadership team, provided facilitation and labor relations, and supported and designed employee development. Byron has also worked as an organizational development consultant working with leaders and leadership teams internationally. His past clients have included; Shell, Rio Tinto, Transocean Asia Pacific, Woodside Petroleum, BHP Iron Ore, PGN Indonesia and the Government of Western Australia. Finally, Byron served as a faculty member the Curtin Graduate School of Business in Australia for 5 years providing design, teaching and research in both their MBA and Master of Leadership and Management Programs. For Duke CE, Byron has worked as a key client partner and educator for clients such as Microsoft, Rio Tinto, and New Zealand Telecom.

Byron is both a Canadian and Australian citizen and lives in the United States. This means a few things; 1) his kids have interesting accents and 2) Byron brings different perspectives to educational design, delivery and culture. He continues to be driven by the ever changing demands and challenges of leadership, and how local and global leaders navigate the expansive mass of leadership development methods and offerings.

Byron’s current research interests are the macro perspective of employee development. Namely how do the main players in employee development interface towards creating meaningful and effective educational and developmental experiences that meet organizational and individual leader perspectives?  Byron has authored the “Leadership Development Interface Model” as a potential road map for leaders and organizations to navigate the leadership development landscape and has incorporated the role of business schools and consultants in the leadership development process as part of his PhD dissertation – “The Leadership Development Interface: A Hermeneutic Perspective.”

Byron received his PhD from the Curtin Graduate School of Business. He holds a Master's degree in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.
